How To Fix MAFIA 3 0xc0000142 Error Code

Mafia III error fix so assuming your Windows and drivers are up-to-date, the problem games are having is that your User Name & User Folder have special characters in them. When the game attempts to search for the files, it runs into a problem processing the special characters in name of your user folders. Don’t ask me why or how, cuz iont even know…

Step 1: In the search box, type and select ‘User Accounts’.
Step 2: Click on “Change your account name”
Step 3: Change Account Name to something without special characters.

Next we need to create a restore point just in case we need to revert back if anything goes wrong. If you’ve already done this, proceed to Step 9!

Step 4: In the search box, type and select ‘Create a restore point’.
Step 5: Select your C: drive and click configure
Step 6: Turn on system protection
Step 7: Select your Disk Space Usage. I chose 10%
Step 8: Hit OK then Apply, Then OK!

Now let’s change the ‘User Folder’ name! Even after you change the username using this method, your personal folder will continue to display the old username. AND this will continue to cause problems with Mafia 3 attempting to launch!

Step 9: In the search box, type and select ‘regedit’.
Step 10: Now, navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

You’ll see several folders that have S-1-5-, in front… Search them until you find a ProfileImagePath pointing to your OLD username.

Step 11: Double-click on it and replace your OLD username with your NEW username!
Step 12: Close out everything, then restart the PC!

Most likely when you come back from this restart, IF you are able to resign into your account, you may get an error that tells you there was an issue signing you in. SIGN OUT or DISMISS? Simply click DISMISS and navigate to your USERS folder within your C drive and rename your USER FOLDER to what you renamed it to in regedit! The system made the registry changes but NOT the actual folder change. Some users may have to create a temporary account, if it prompts you to, knock it out, make the user folder changes and restart your PC again. This time when you come back, everything will be back to normal and you can launch your games without painfully waiting on a game to load that never did.
